Why Your Business Isn't Generating Calls or Leads
When is the last time your marketing agency or in-house marketing team asked you about your business(es) unique selling proposition? Until recently, it wasn't a major topic of conversation for me.

As a marketer with over a decade of hands-on marketing experience, my main focus is drive leads and revenue. That always started with the ad messaging, the website experience, the tracking setup and the targeting.
It was rare that I actually had a client who said "this is what sets me apart" and it wasn't something generic or cookie cutter.
They talk about "well we do the job better than our competitors," or my personal favorite "we believe in integrity" so thats what allegedly sets them apart. To be honest, most businesses don't have a unique selling proposition.
This isn't a shot at anyone reading this I promise, but it is a reality most marketers face that makes it even tougher for us to get you those leads or those jobs.
If your messaging sounds exactly the same as the guy two blocks down, then you've just told your prospective customers there is no difference between you and the next joe. Even worse, if there is a difference, it's most likely going to be pricing. So that prospect just chooses whoever is cheapest, not necessarily who is more qualified.
Some businesses don't even have a lead volume problem especially the businesses using Meta and Google for advertising. The real problem is that you actually lost because you didn't give your prospective customers any reason to pick you.
So how do you fix this issue?
Ask Yourself or The Business Owner These Questions:
I know this might seem tough or hard but its really a reality check.
What do you actually do thats different from your competitors? None of that integrity crap or we've been in business for over 50 years... What is actually different? If your competitor offers a 7-point AC tune up check, do you offer a 12-point AC tune up check? If so, whats the additional value the customer gets out of it?
What specific pain point do you solve better than the competitor thats right down the street?
How is your business the only logical choice in your current market from the prospective customers view? How does your customer perception set you up to be the "right one," instead of just another option?
If you (business owner or marketer) were searching for this product or service, would you pick yourself? Why or why not?
Or if you want to skip the back and forth, you can try out my new Unique Selling Proposition Generator — and get some ideas of what your USP could be.
Most businesses that I've spoken to recently have said to me "Sam, I've never really thought about this before." They just assume that the "work" will magically speak for itself.
They believe that having a hero image on their website that says "Exceptional Quality. Veteran / Family Owned For 20 Years" will be just enough to get people to book. And when it doesn't "work," all they can see is wasted advertising spend and a waste of time.
The businesses that win are the ones who know exactly what sets them apart.
They become the business that everyone remembers. That previous customers recommend to their friends, neighbors and family members. The ones who keep the refrigerator magnet in case of emergency or hold onto the business card because they just have to get in touch.
So... if you got to the bottom of this article and you can't say in one sentence why a customer should choose you over your competitor, thats the most important thing you need to fix!
